The Mission to Develop the Genomic and Meta-genomic Surveillance System is Assigned to the Pasteur Institute of Iran
In collaboration with the Deputy of Health at the Ministry of Health, Treatment, and Education, the development of the genomic and meta-genomic surveillance system for infectious diseases has been entrusted to the Pasteur Institute of Iran. This strategic action marks an important step toward enhancing public health, strengthening health policy based on scientific data, and increasing the country’s readiness against emerging health threats.
One of the primary functions of this system is the precise monitoring of infectious and emerging diseases. With the capacity to sequence pathogen genomes, this system will be able to identify genetic mutations and new strains of pathogens rapidly. This capability allows health officials and stakeholders to respond quickly, scientifically, and evidence-based in case of health threats like epidemics or pandemics.
The COVID-19 pandemic experience demonstrated that countries need advanced tools such as genomic surveillance systems to effectively combat infectious diseases, track viral changes, predict disease spread, and optimize vaccination and treatment programs. Additionally, this system can map the genetic distribution of pathogens across different regions of the country, aiding policymakers in implementing targeted regional interventions.
The Pasteur Institute of Iran, as a scientific and research entity with over a century of experience in public health and infectious diseases, has taken on the responsibility of implementing this national project. Using domestic capabilities and international collaborations, the institute aims to develop infrastructure that can ensure the health of Iranians against current and future threats.
According to the agreements made, it has been decided that the costs for establishing this program will be funded by the Deputy of Health at the Ministry of Health, while the Pasteur Institute of Iran will be responsible for drafting both the strategic and operational plans.
